A note from Rob: My life as an agency owner in 2018
How has 2018 treated you? What do you have in store for the next 12 months? I’d love to hear from you about your plans. This year has been a special one for me for a number of different reasons. Our brand and digital agency, The Escape, has been trading for 20 years, which is an incredible achievement, both a milestone and a gentle reminder to keep innovating and moving forward.
2018 marked the year that we injected new life into our business. We appointed a business growth consultant, two new developers, and a marketing manager – a first for us, and an important hire so we can give ourselves the same care that we give to our clients.
Our client successes
Speaking of which, we’ve worked with a brilliant bunch of clients this year. In our role as their strategic brand and marketing partner, we’re thrilled to have launched a new brand and website for the University of Southampton Science Park as well as activating a number of initiatives throughout the Park. And we were finalists for “Consumer website of the year” at the Wirehive 100 Awards for the website we designed and built for Infinity Motorcycles.
We’ve extended our hospitality client roster too as we’ve started working with Harbour Hotels Group. As we were up against some bigger agencies, we were thrilled to win this account. I’m sure you’ll hear more about what we’re working on in 2019.
Our 20th birthday celebrations
Come March, we’ll be marking the last month of our 20th birthday celebrations. Earlier in 2018 we welcomed familiar faces and some old Escapees to our party at Bombay Sapphire Distillery, but we’ve got some more plans in the pipeline if you couldn’t make it along – watch this space.
We’ll be doing our bit for one of the charities we support, Naomi House and Jacksplace. The plan is to do a sponsored walk with our nearest and dearest, so do let me know if you’re interested in coming along. We’ll also be doing some low-key activities here in our farmhouse, so keep an eye on our social media in March to see what we’re up to.
Our events and activities
This year we’ve welcomed many of our clients, contacts and suppliers to our farmhouse here in Basingstoke. From summer BBQ breakfasts to kick off workshops, plenty of you have toured our building, met office dog Harley, and made the most of our garden and patio area.
Of course, we’ve spent a fair bit of time outside of our farmhouse too. I’d say that in 2018, we attended more events in one year than we have in the last five. We might live in the digital age, but I believe that human interaction is still more powerful for businesses like ours.
For example, we spent a day cycling on the Isle of Wight with some key contacts in the construction and property industry; something we’d love to make a more regular thing – regardless of sector. If you fancy joining us for a cycle social, just let me know and we can add something to our calendar.

We’re looking to collaborate with more specialist partners in 2019, as well as helping businesses with their branding and digital pain points. Last week we all went down to Southampton for our Christmas party celebrations. We took on two of the escape rooms at Houdini's Escape Room Experience, and had a wonderful meal at the Southampton Harbour Hotel. Before you ask, yes, we did all manage to escape the rooms, even though one of the rooms only has a 21% success rate. It was a great day with the team, especially as we were victorious!
